Back end
Q: My dog is a dalmation lab mix. he is about 10yrs. for the past couple of years he is very stiff getting up from sleeping or just lying in one position. he has some difficulty up and down stairs, but not always. he loves running and catching the ball and does it like he has no problem. he goes for walks and has lost weight as the vet recommended. the vet gave us pills for lubricating and restoring cartelige, but he is still the same.some days he is in more pain than others. what can i give him to take the pain away. his name is chewy.
A: It may be time for the veterinarian to add a prescription anti-inflammatory to the regimen.
Pills
Q: Frontlineplus doesn't work on my pets; 3 indoor cats, and one indoor/outdoor dog...i see fleas/scratching well before the mo. is out. my vet only provides frontline/frontlineplus. then i heard about a flea/tick cat med., given in pill form, used monthly, that not only kills fleas and ticks, but also provides some protection from fungal(i.e. (cat) ringworm) skin infections; esp. for the sphynx breed. if this is true, where can i get it? thanks, marilyn axt
A: There is no tablet form for cats. i would suggest a thorough cleaning and vacuuming of your pets area. it seems more of a reinfestation problem. you can get some suggestions on our website under "education" & "flea control". it is not unusual to see live fleas on your pets. the frontline plus only works when the fleas walk through the fur, they are then poisoned and will die. if you want to get rid of all the adult fleas you could use "capstar" tablets for a couple of days to kill all adult fleas within hours.

Unfinished tablet
Q: My 13lb shi-tzu would not consume the heartgard plus tablet by itself so i broke it up in her food. unfortunately, she only ate about half of the tablet( can't be sure of exact dose taken) and would not complete that serving of food all day. the tablets are for dogs up to 25 lbs...will half a tablet protect her? should i give her another tablet? she is quite lethargic and slow moving since eating the heartgard plus but is in heat.... thanks for any advice you can offer... i just rescued this dog about two weeks ago and am already very attached!
A: I would not use these pills when she is in heat. better off skipping a month as can have reactions to drugs, vaccines, etc when given during heat period. dont worry for now but if note lethargy, upset stomach again next month then i would consider switching heartworm preventative pills to interceptor
Shop for: heartgard, heartgard plus, interceptor
Tapeworm
Q: Hi, my dog has signs of tapeworm, that is the small white segments near the anus. i just purchased the "tapeworm tabs". she is approx. 80lbs and according to your instructions should take all 5 pills. my questions is, do i give her all 5 at the same time? i wasn't sure if that was safe to do, or should i stagger the medication throughout a specific time period. thank you for answer.
A: You give all 5 tablets as a single dose
Worms
Q: I just saved a dog domestic animal services, (the pound). she had hook worm, and they gave her something for it. when i had brought her home she had ticks really bad. we gave her advantix and many baths. i even bombed my house. i just took another stool sample in and now she has tapeworms. i have a presciption for droncit 34, which was 4 pills all at once. my questions are, will heartguard prevent these worms, and is this normal to have 2 different worms within a month. also do you carry any medicines for the hookworm and tapeworms, without a presciption?
A: Heartgard is for heartworm prevention only. heartgard plus will also protect against hookworm and roundworm. panacur-c is an over the counter, broad spectrum wormer, that will treat hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm.
Shop for: heartgard, tick, heartgard plus, advantix
Dry skin
Q: I have a border collie, austrailian shepard mix. his skin is very dry and flakes. he doesn't like to take pills is there anything i can give him to stop him from scratching? i have used a dry skin shampoo with aloe in it but he still scratches.
A: Purchase the brite coat xs capsules. puncture a capsule with a pin and mix the liquid in with his food.
Why are puppies born with worms?
Q: Why are puppies born with worms?
A: Larvae, the immature form of worms such as hookworm and roundworm can migrate through the mother’s uterus and into the developing fetus. therefore puppies can become infected with these worms while they are still in the mother’s uterus. | | | |
