WormsQ: I just saved a dog domestic animal services, (the pound). she had hook worm, and they gave her something for it. when i had brought her home she had ticks really bad. we gave her advantix and many baths. i even bombed my house. i just took another stool sample in and now she has tapeworms. i have a presciption for droncit 34, which was 4 pills all at once. my questions are, will heartguard prevent these worms, and is this normal to have 2 different worms within a month. also do you carry any medicines for the hookworm and tapeworms, without a presciption? A: Heartgard is for heartworm prevention only. heartgard plus will also protect against hookworm and roundworm. panacur-c is an over the counter, broad spectrum wormer, that will treat hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm.

In ref. to flea, tick & heartworm medicationQ: We have a bouvier named "sassy," after many tests we have found out she was infected with a tick and has lyme disease. our doctor has her on doxycycline 100mg. (is this a good medication for her treatment. we give her 1 & 1/2 pills twice a day) we are not sure how long she has been infected but i think it may have been for some time. i have her on advantage, and no heartworm medication. . i have heard about revolution and wanted to know if this is something that i should consider for her after we take care of this immediate problem. another question is in regards to the lyme disease, is there any long term problems once she has been infected. we are so concerned about her and want to keep her safe and happy. she is a little over 8years old and a very small bouvier, about 65#. (lost weigh due to the lyme infection normally around 76#.) she is not an outdoor dog as you might think. . .we have about 2 acres not a lot of trees. she spends her time outside but sleeps inside with us. thank you for your time in answering our questions. sincerely, jud A: Doxycycline is the drug of choice for the treatment of lyme disease. if you follow your veterinarian's instructions for care and treatment there should be no long term effects, depending on how long the pet had untreated disease. your pet should be on heartworm medication. revolution is an effective product.

Medicine for liver reading off the chartsQ: Do you have a suggestion for liver reading off the charts? my vet prescribed zenotil which cannot be cut up or crushed and my cat won't take it. i live alone and don't have anyone to help me hold the cat while i try to open her mouth. she is also taking hyperthyroid pills but these are no problem as they can be crushed and put in her food. do you know of another pill whilch would help her liver? she has lost weight and is hiding under the bed, as she is afraid i will try to force her. her latest thyroid reading was normal. do you have a suggestion for another medication, one that can be cut up and will it interfere with her tapazol (methmazole 5 mg) ? ItchingQ: My dog, a male shepherd/sheltie mix has suffered for approx. 2 years with itchy feet. in the last year, it has become an itch problem all over his body. initially, it was so bad, he would bite himself bald on his feet and legs!now his scratching is less severe, however, it seems more widespread and has extended to his eyes which are starting to drain. he is also constantly scratching his ears. he has been to the vet every month for the last year. he was getting prednisone shots and pills for a long time, but started developing cysts on his body and we feared long term organ damage. we have stopped the shots and pills. this is when the scratching became milder but more consistant. any ideas what could be the root cause? we have tried allergy diet foods recommended by the vet to no avail. if no cure is known, what about treating the symptoms? we have tried benedryl, no help. anything you can suggest would be appreciated. A: I would recommend blood allergy testing to see if inhalent allergies involved like allergies to ragweed, grasses molds danders pollens, etc allergy vaccines can be made up. you could also ask vet about new drug for allergies known as atopica which is less toxic than chronic cortisone
