Knee/ligaments pulled, she's my 12yr old wolf
Q: Ihave 2 questions, my wolf's son started getting very angry towards his mother, about 6 months ago. he is a hy-brid. please do't get me wrong he is a good boy, but his attitude is scaring me. number one , why would he get angry at his mom? and 2 sasha the mom, got tackled by him, they both weigh 100pds. we took her to an alternate vet, and she said sasha'a knee was out , but this lady was really wrenching to make her cry. sasha won't cry in pain unles she really is . my ? the vet said she had torn and or strecthed ligaments, will she be okay, or will she need rimadyl for the rest of her life. these pills have calmed her a bit, but i don't want her life to cloudy. and she still has the spritit of the wolf in her. thank you tiger
A: If ligaments are torn, best is surgical repair of cruciates. i dont think life long rimadyl necessary if underyling surgical issue. if not, then try supplements like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds as well as extra antioxidant nutrients like vitamin e at 400iu or vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 1000 mg twice daily
Shop for: rimadyl, vitamin, 1800petmeds, joint enhancer

Use of vetalog
Q: My dog has seasonal allergies. it only happens late summer and into fall. our vet gives us vetalog 1.5mg to use, and starts her off with an injection of the same, stating the pills will not be as affective without it. is this true, and after what i have read of the recommendations give to others in the same situation, is this treatment safe? i was not made aware of the risks or longterm affests of vetalog. this is used only during the summertime when the symptoms occur (which seem to be early this year).
A: I am not fan of long acting steroids like vetalog and much prefer with similar results tapering dose of short acting prednisone over a few weeks to alternate day therapy as best way of using cortisone in practice. no need for injections. oral way is less toxic and stressful on immune system and adrenal glands and way most vet dermatologists use cortisone
Shop for: prednisone

One a day pills
Q: I have been giving my dogs one a day pills (nemacide) since 1980. i am having a hard time finding them. do you know where i can purchase them? if not, what is the best possible monthly to give them? i have irish setters over 50 lbs. i do frontline for fleas and ticks and have never had a problem with any types of worms. i would perfer the one a day if they are still around. any help would be appreciated. thank you, dorothy kumpula
A: Nemacide has been discontinued. you need to begin using a monthly heartworm preventative such as interceptor. however, interceptor needs to be started within 30 days of the last nemacide dose, otherwise a new heartworm test needs to be done.
Shop for: interceptor, tick, frontline

Dry skin
Q: I have a border collie, austrailian shepard mix. his skin is very dry and flakes. he doesn't like to take pills is there anything i can give him to stop him from scratching? i have used a dry skin shampoo with aloe in it but he still scratches.
A: Purchase the brite coat xs capsules. puncture a capsule with a pin and mix the liquid in with his food.

Household- multiple cats
Q: I am looking for a flea tick med for my cats that is usable in a household of two cats which "groom" (lick) each other on a regular basis including the neck area where so many of these topical applications are to be applied. the cats swallow pills fine. is there any pill or oral med instead of the topical applications or are the topical applications safe in our circumstance?
A: Program is available as tablets and liquid for cats. however, this is only for fleas. if you want flea and tick control, you can use frontline plus for cats. however, you should keep your cats separated for at least 24 hours after applying.
Shop for: tick, frontline plus, frontline

Ear infections
Q: My lab has a problem with her ears again. she has had several ear infections and always seems to get them back every few months. she has had drops, drops with prednisone, and prednisone pills at times. she usually starts with a very dark brown wax in her ears and then she starts shaking her head and her ears get all red under the flap. she had kennel cough several months ago and i have some doxycycline left from that. would it help to give her some of that to clear up the infection?
A: I wouldn't without checking with your own veterinarian. antibiotics are prescribed based on the type of infection. what's going on in your pet's ear may require a different antibiotic. only an examination can tell.
Shop for: prednisone

Loose bowels a lot
Q: Dear vet, my dog buddy a black lab gets a upset stomach and loose bowels very often. i can hear his stomach making growling noises. his vet has given him some pills that stop the condition almost immediately but after a few days it seems to come back. i don't know what to do about this it worries me he is 7 years old. thanks, dodie
A: I recommend further diagnostics to determine the cause of the problem. lab tests and x-rays along with a parasite check may be helpful. you might need to ask for a referral to a specialist in veterinary internal medicine.

Abscess
Q: My dog had a lump just below his eye. the lump broke and drained. it has been draining for 3 weeks. in that time i have used antibiotic pills and triple antibiotic ointment. i am currently using baytril. as soon as the wound heels shut it swells up and then breaks open and starts draining. i wash it off several times daily with a wash cloth. and have used three different antibiotics and there doesn't seem to be an end to this problem. my dog is under a veterinarians care. is there more first aid that i can do to end this. as will i consult the veterinarian too.
A: Make sure vet has ruled out underyling foreign body or tumor under eye which needs to be addressed. also might want to culture discharge to make sure right antibiotic has been used for long enough time
