Loose bowels a lot
Q: Dear vet, my dog buddy a black lab gets a upset stomach and loose bowels very often. i can hear his stomach making growling noises. his vet has given him some pills that stop the condition almost immediately but after a few days it seems to come back. i don't know what to do about this it worries me he is 7 years old. thanks, dodie
A: I recommend further diagnostics to determine the cause of the problem. lab tests and x-rays along with a parasite check may be helpful. you might need to ask for a referral to a specialist in veterinary internal medicine.
Frontline plus
Q: I recently spent a lot of money and bought frontline plus for my dog and cat. my dog weighs 30 pounds and my cat weighs 5 pounds. so far after three days, frontline plus is not working! both animals are scratching just as much as ever except more on their heads! what should i do now. i hate seeing my animals suffering, but i don't have a lot of m oney to spend and i am disappointed on the product i recently used. is there some pills i can give them that will work better? please let me know. thanks
A: You can order capstar tablets which will kill the existing fleas within a short time and allow the frontline plus to function as it was intended.

Abscess
Q: My dog had a lump just below his eye. the lump broke and drained. it has been draining for 3 weeks. in that time i have used antibiotic pills and triple antibiotic ointment. i am currently using baytril. as soon as the wound heels shut it swells up and then breaks open and starts draining. i wash it off several times daily with a wash cloth. and have used three different antibiotics and there doesn't seem to be an end to this problem. my dog is under a veterinarians care. is there more first aid that i can do to end this. as will i consult the veterinarian too.
A: Make sure vet has ruled out underyling foreign body or tumor under eye which needs to be addressed. also might want to culture discharge to make sure right antibiotic has been used for long enough time
Sleeping pills
Q: I have a 14 year old male boston terrier, and he wakes me up at 1 am every morning, would giving him valerian root help him sleep ? he has also been diagonised with blastomycocis, so will the valerian root be ok to use, he weighs 31 lbs.
A: I have not used this herb in my practice. i would try some natural flower essences like rescue remedy from health food store
Blood in urine
Q: During the winter i notice my dog was peeing blood. i took him to the vet and she said dont give him any people food. she gave me some pills to give him, and put him on hills prescription diet s/d. he finished the pills and she said said his urine was clear. but hes still on the hills. is there any thing else that will keep him clear? im retired and am not able to make extra money to help pay for this food. thanks dale
A: I am not a big fan of these diets and feel athat they are not necessary in most cases long term. in fact the s/d diet is really only useful if a dog has been shown to have active bladder stones, and then used only temporarily in an attempt to dissolve them. it is not meant to be long term diet. try good natural diet like pet guard or innova or canidae. diets are way overplayed even for preventing urinary infections which has no scientific basis. most vets receive very little nutrition in vet school and tell clients what pet food manufacterers tell us!!!!
Cat issues! help!
Q: I have two indoor cats, b.c. (male, 1yr) and diesel (female, approx. 7 mo.). bc used to be an outdoor cat and he had fleas and an open surface wound just below the ear from scratching when we got him. i assumed he was scatching at fleas, but now, as they are below both ears and my other cat is doing the same thing- they are litterally attacking their ears, i beleive they may have ear mites. what treatment would you recommend? recently, when left in the bathroom all day accidently, bc pooed on the floor and it was a bit bloody and wormy, something i had never noticed on account of the litter. i think he got them a couple of mo. ago when he got out. we tried hartz dewormer pills on both cats, on two different occasions, and it didn't work on either cat on either occasion. again, what treatment would you recommend? my third and final question... fleas!!! i plan on getting frontline b/c it actually works, however, the apts we live in are 80yrs old and even before we got cats there were fleas via cracks in the floor boards, etc. what can i do in addition to the frontline and mgnmt's occasional exterminator visits (do those high frequency sound thingies work)? thank you very much for the advice and store! this is a god send, esp. for financially challenged college students &our poor li'l kitty meows!
A: Try mitaclear from 1800petmeds for ear mites. also for worming try nemex also given at two doses 3 weeks apart. also for flea control in house check out fleabusters who can find on line. natural and best environmental flea control
