WormsQ: I just saved a dog domestic animal services, (the pound). she had hook worm, and they gave her something for it. when i had brought her home she had ticks really bad. we gave her advantix and many baths. i even bombed my house. i just took another stool sample in and now she has tapeworms. i have a presciption for droncit 34, which was 4 pills all at once. my questions are, will heartguard prevent these worms, and is this normal to have 2 different worms within a month. also do you carry any medicines for the hookworm and tapeworms, without a presciption? A: Heartgard is for heartworm prevention only. heartgard plus will also protect against hookworm and roundworm. panacur-c is an over the counter, broad spectrum wormer, that will treat hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm.

A: I dont like these lite foods as i feel they do supplement nutrients as well as calories and therefore i find alot of dogs who eat these foods have poor quality coats. i would use supplements like prozyme from 1800petmeds as well as flax seed oil at 1 tea per 20 pounds of body weight daily, as well as lecithin and kelp from health food store. check out dr. pitcairns guide to natural health for dogs and cats by richard pitcairn for more suggestions and dosages

HyperthyroidismQ: My cat is 14 years old and has lost a lot of weight in the last couple of years. my vet's diagnosis was thyroid problems, so we were given some pills. the cat would not take them at the time, and now i cannot get a refill, because it has been over a year. i cannot take the amnilmal back to the vet, as he does not support driving, and i fear he is not going to make it. could i buy from you on line some medication appropriate for his treatment. the name of the previous one was tapazole if i remember correctly. thank you in advance, regards, zoya A: We carry both the brand and generic equivalent for the tapazole, and with your veterinarian's approval we can also supply it in a flavored liquid if that would make administering it easier.
Frontline plusQ: I recently spent a lot of money and bought frontline plus for my dog and cat. my dog weighs 30 pounds and my cat weighs 5 pounds. so far after three days, frontline plus is not working! both animals are scratching just as much as ever except more on their heads! what should i do now. i hate seeing my animals suffering, but i don't have a lot of m oney to spend and i am disappointed on the product i recently used. is there some pills i can give them that will work better? please let me know. thanks A: You can order capstar tablets which will kill the existing fleas within a short time and allow the frontline plus to function as it was intended.

Mistletoe poisoningQ: Our 75# lab and 20# beagle ate a small amount of dry mistletoe ( a few leaves each), will this be harmful? A: Should not be a problem. watch for digestive upset but should be ok if only tiny bits
Back endQ: My dog is a dalmation lab mix. he is about 10yrs. for the past couple of years he is very stiff getting up from sleeping or just lying in one position. he has some difficulty up and down stairs, but not always. he loves running and catching the ball and does it like he has no problem. he goes for walks and has lost weight as the vet recommended. the vet gave us pills for lubricating and restoring cartelige, but he is still the same.some days he is in more pain than others. what can i give him to take the pain away. his name is chewy. A: It may be time for the veterinarian to add a prescription anti-inflammatory to the regimen.
SheddingQ: My 5yr old lab has always shed. i've become acustomed to using a lint brush daily before leaving the house. but this year, it is out of control. is it possible that this year the seasons is worse than others? and why? what weather factors create these conditions? could she be sick, and need vitamins? also, there is no simple product to elivate this symptom, dr's. recommend pills, shampoos, diet, food, ect. what is best product for yellow labs, and please explain, why do they lose so much hair? is it constantly growing back? does the summer months create more shedding, because they are hot dogs?(ha, ha) my lab loves to swim, and i keep her cool in her pool, but the fur is never ending. please help my fur monster. with fur & love, miss macey dog A: I will answer most of your many questions below. shedding is due to many factors many of which you review above, including dietary factors, seasonal factors, allergies, etc all which differ in each dog. when i have an excessively shedding dog i usually make sure they are on superior diet such as all natural ones like pet guard or innova brand or wellness brands being my favorite. i also like to supplement with extra nutrients and enzymes like brite coat xs as well as prozyme from 1800petmeds. also consider getting some kelp and lecithin granules from health food store to add to food which also helps some dogs
