Unfinished tablet
Q: My 13lb shi-tzu would not consume the heartgard plus tablet by itself so i broke it up in her food. unfortunately, she only ate about half of the tablet( can't be sure of exact dose taken) and would not complete that serving of food all day. the tablets are for dogs up to 25 lbs...will half a tablet protect her? should i give her another tablet? she is quite lethargic and slow moving since eating the heartgard plus but is in heat.... thanks for any advice you can offer... i just rescued this dog about two weeks ago and am already very attached!
A: I would not use these pills when she is in heat. better off skipping a month as can have reactions to drugs, vaccines, etc when given during heat period. dont worry for now but if note lethargy, upset stomach again next month then i would consider switching heartworm preventative pills to interceptor

Tapeworm
Q: Hi, my dog has signs of tapeworm, that is the small white segments near the anus. i just purchased the "tapeworm tabs". she is approx. 80lbs and according to your instructions should take all 5 pills. my questions is, do i give her all 5 at the same time? i wasn't sure if that was safe to do, or should i stagger the medication throughout a specific time period. thank you for answer.
A: You give all 5 tablets as a single dose
Scratches & loses hair
Q: I have a 3 yr old schipperke. he scratches himself til he bleeds & has alot of hair loss. my vet had him on prednisone & another kind of pill. bathed him in a dip which seemed to help til the pills were finished. he started the same process over again. someone told me about a shampoo for dogs that would eliminate this. can you tell me what is the best to use?
A: Thre is a shampoo called allermyl that has an anti-inflammatory effect. you may find this product of benefit.

Diarrhea in puppy
Q: I have a 5 month old shih-tzu male puppy. he is eating everything and keeps getting loose stools and sometimes diarrhea. i have given immodium pills to my other dog before. is it alright to give this to my puppy? it seemed to work for the other dog in the past. thanks, helen hernandez
A: It is ok for a day or two but can cause constipation and cramping if used longer than that. if continues take to vet
Cat issues! help!
Q: I have two indoor cats, b.c. (male, 1yr) and diesel (female, approx. 7 mo.). bc used to be an outdoor cat and he had fleas and an open surface wound just below the ear from scratching when we got him. i assumed he was scatching at fleas, but now, as they are below both ears and my other cat is doing the same thing- they are litterally attacking their ears, i beleive they may have ear mites. what treatment would you recommend? recently, when left in the bathroom all day accidently, bc pooed on the floor and it was a bit bloody and wormy, something i had never noticed on account of the litter. i think he got them a couple of mo. ago when he got out. we tried hartz dewormer pills on both cats, on two different occasions, and it didn't work on either cat on either occasion. again, what treatment would you recommend? my third and final question... fleas!!! i plan on getting frontline b/c it actually works, however, the apts we live in are 80yrs old and even before we got cats there were fleas via cracks in the floor boards, etc. what can i do in addition to the frontline and mgnmt's occasional exterminator visits (do those high frequency sound thingies work)? thank you very much for the advice and store! this is a god send, esp. for financially challenged college students &our poor li'l kitty meows!
A: Try mitaclear from 1800petmeds for ear mites. also for worming try nemex also given at two doses 3 weeks apart. also for flea control in house check out fleabusters who can find on line. natural and best environmental flea control

Household- multiple cats
Q: I am looking for a flea tick med for my cats that is usable in a household of two cats which "groom" (lick) each other on a regular basis including the neck area where so many of these topical applications are to be applied. the cats swallow pills fine. is there any pill or oral med instead of the topical applications or are the topical applications safe in our circumstance?
A: Program is available as tablets and liquid for cats. however, this is only for fleas. if you want flea and tick control, you can use frontline plus for cats. however, you should keep your cats separated for at least 24 hours after applying.

Tapeworm
Q: If my cat has tapeworms, and i order the bottle with 3 pills in it will that be enough to get rid of them, or will i need more then 3 pills?
A: That depends on the weight of the cat and the medication you will be using. the veterinarian evidently ordered the 3 pills based on those factors.
Ear infections
Q: My lab has a problem with her ears again. she has had several ear infections and always seems to get them back every few months. she has had drops, drops with prednisone, and prednisone pills at times. she usually starts with a very dark brown wax in her ears and then she starts shaking her head and her ears get all red under the flap. she had kennel cough several months ago and i have some doxycycline left from that. would it help to give her some of that to clear up the infection?
A: I wouldn't without checking with your own veterinarian. antibiotics are prescribed based on the type of infection. what's going on in your pet's ear may require a different antibiotic. only an examination can tell.
